Today’s word is: Play
I was round my sister’s house when it happened. She lived in an old house, built in the 1800s. I never thought anything of it. Well I did, but the house was beautiful in a historical way. It never occurred to me that I couldn’t be the only one home, especially when everyone had just left me here alone.
“Will you play with me?” I screamed and grabbed at my chest. In the doorway was a little girl. She was dressed in a pretty white summer dress, perfect for this years weather. I smiled, and said “You’re not supposed to be in here.”
The little girl giggled. “I am. Julie said I can play here whenever I want.”
Julie was my sister, and I silently curse her for telling the girl this. I recall Julie mentioning her neighbour has a daughter who plays in the garden sometimes. This must be that girl. What was I supposed to do with an eight year old though? Julie was expecting her first child, it was early enough that she hadn’t bought any toys yet. So I said, “Do you want to watch TV with me?”
“Not really. Come play outside with me, please.” She held out her hand for me to take.
“I don’t really wanna play outside, it’s too hot.”
“That’s what mamma said. Can I show you something then?”
I shrugged and said “Sure.” I took her hand and she guided me through Julie’s house. “You know your way round here pretty good.” I said as she led me to the third floor, where the bedrooms were.
“Julie showed me.” And then she stopped. She pushed the nearest door open, it was the to-be-nursery.
I looked down at her and said, “We shouldn’t be in here.”
“We’re not. But you mustn’t let Julie put the baby boy in here.” That’s when I froze. A Boy? There was no way this child new Julie was having a boy, Julie didn’t know herself.
“How do you–“
“That doesn’t matter. Just don’t let her make this the nursery.” The little girl’s tone was serious. As though she had aged fifty years just walking up the stairs.
“Why not?”
“Because, that’s where my mother murdered me.”
